Coffee is the fundamental fuel that Austinites run on. It's necessary for work, study, and play. Plus, cafes offer the perfect places to procrastinate, putter around, and people-watch with caffeine and great food in hand.

And the stuff at these coffee shops tastes so much better than what you’ll find at the big chains (you know the one), plus their beans are a lot cleaner and more fairly traded, too.

That said, the thought of rounding up the best of the best is a bit overwhelming, as no list could be comprehensive enough to include every favorite neighborhood haunt. If your go-to isn’t listed below, I hope you’ll forgive me (and leave a comment) — I know how personal this can feel. Still, I hope you’ll enjoy the 20 best coffee shops in Austin below.

In Austin, this means obsessive cafes like local roasters Cuvee Coffee's flagship shop and Houndstooth Coffee, the convivial vibes of South Austin go-to Radio Coffee & Bar (breakfast taco proximity doesn't hurt, either), to the inventive mixed coffee drinks at Fleet Coffee (alcohol isn’t involved).

This winter update of Eater’s coffee shop map, which comprises a mix of essential cafes and fresh newcomers, adds South Austin cafe The Meteor.
